All Michael Vick Wants For Christmas Is A New Puppy
“Aw who’s the puppy for? Who? Hmmm … No dog for you!”
So much for having people pay more attention to his play on the field. Michael Vick confessed to wanting a new dog.
Vick sat down with NBC News and TheGrio.com and admitted he wanted a new dog to help with his “rehabilitation process”.
Vick said, “I would love to get another dog in the future. I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process.
“I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love and my passion for animals; I think it would be outstanding. If I ever have the opportunity again I will never take it for granted. I miss having a dog right now. I wish I could. My daughters miss having one, and that’s the hardest thing: telling them that we can’t have one because of my actions.”
It’s like the Obama press conference where he was talking about health care and then decided to give his thoughts on Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s confrontation with the police. “No! Don’t go there! Not now! Aw damn, he went there…” Everyone forgot everything else he was talking about the rest of the time.
It probably isn’t the best time for Vick to bring up wanting a new dog. People have finally started to talk about him only in relation to his play on the field. He should stick to talking football and his work with animal rights organizations if the conversation goes there.
It’s almost impossible to have a rational conversation about Vick with “dog lovers”. As far as they’re concerned, Vick shouldn’t be allowed to have a career let alone walk the streets. It doesn’t matter to them that he served his time and has kept himself out of trouble since his release from jail. Any attempt to say otherwise means that you hate dogs or approve of what Vick did. That’s ridiculous. No sane person condones what Vick did. It was disgusting and horrible. He deserved to pay for what he did. He also deserves a second chance and it’s not up to any of us to determine what he should and shouldn’t be able to do as long as he keeps his nose clean. Fine. Dog catcher is out.
The debate over Vick goes to the larger question of what rights felons should have after their release from prison. If they serve their time, they should be given the chance to become productive members of society with the rights everyone else enjoys. The idea is that they’ve learned from their incarceration and are in the process of rehabilitation. The justice system fails inmates in numerous ways but people should be given the chance to show whether they’ve changed or not. Obviously there are exceptions and caveats but that conversation is for another day.
People can argue about whether Vick’s punishment was harsh enough and whether he’s sincere about changing who he is as a person as well as his attitude towards animals. One can only hope that he means what he says. Do I feel comfortable with the idea of him owning a dog so soon after his crimes after everything I’ve said? At the risk of sounding like a hypocrite, no. It’s too soon however I also realize that it’s not up to me to determine when the time is right if it ever is. I equate it to not allowing child molesters around children even after they’ve served their time. It’s not something that is turned on and off like a switch. It goes deeper than that. Does the urge to be that way ever go away? I don’t think so but who knows. Better safe than sorry in some cases. At least he realizes that he can’t and probably shouldn’t have a dog for the foreseeable future.
The one thing we can say for sure is that going to prison made Vick a much better quarterback. That boy good and not terrible.
The full interview will be posted on TheGrio.com later today.

What lazy, uninspired argumentation. Vick doesn’t “deserve” anything. He was sentenced for a crime, to a mandatory incarceration. He didn’t do something noble. He isn’t owed anything. He is deserving of the outcome, not of entitlement.
No, Vick should be allowed a dog because if you believe in tolerance and redemption, you also believe in second chances. Vick should be allowed a dog because it is the practice of an act that should be afforded to most, but not necessarily all, individuals who fuck-up. If it further helps with his rehabilitation (mentally, fuck the p.r. element), so much the better. But he is not entitled to anything merely because he served a prison term demanded of him by the people and their representatives in the judicial system. Let Michael have a dog so that we may show the mercy that he did not afford those dogs he cruelly treated.
If you hadn’t got lost in attempting to make a political point about animal rights activists, Michael Vick fandom, etc,. you’d probably have limited yourself to an argument that holds water. Don’t conjoin one harried, shitty, illogical argument with one that is supremely reasonable. But lo, don’t let fanaticism towards sports personalities get in the way of sense.
And bullshit, yes we the public get a say in whatever future Vick has in relation to his crime. To say otherwise is namby-pamby argumentation of the most desultory kind. But then, your arguments are overstuffed with straw so to expect more may be a stretch.
let him have a dog, I need someone reliable to bet on
Is that last sentence a reference to the Randy Watson scene in “Coming To America”?
So far, most of us agree that Mr. Vick has not yet earned the right to live with a “pet/dog”, because the degree of his disregard to life, a best-friend - a dog - a creation, totally unconditional in it’s love towards people was unconscionable. It takes more time to show an equal devotion - usually years. Mr. Vick should volunteer equal time at Animal Rescue Shelters, as he devotes to professional football. It’s not about the money, but the understanding of animal nature, which means time respecting from a distance,… like forever. Let his daughters’ learn away from him. That’s his real punishment!
It shouldn’t happen to a dog.
The bottom line is that the courts, not public opinion or Michael Vick will decide if and when he can have a pet dog. With the money he will be making next season from the Eagles as the MVP and performance this year, he can afford to take his kids to the zoo or buy them a mountain lion or maybe a zebra. Come on…the dude did bad stuff, got caught, went to jail, and now working the job he did before his incarceration, and doing it well. It is a great story about redemption, and shows the deep loathing most of society has for anyone who has ever been to jail. We all, sometimes, make mistakes and those mistakes can sometimes put us in jail. It doesn’t make us cursed forever or make it such that we cannot continue to contribute to society. In fact, many individuals, like Vick, come out of jail and do MUCH more for society than the average citizen who continues hating him because of his original mistakes. The courts, based on laws written by elected officials, decided his punishment and he served it. Now, he talks to inner city kids about his mistakes, supports pet rights, and is a different man. Isn’t that what we want the criminal justice system to do? Don’t hate him for having the system WORK for a change! By the way, he also pays taxes which is about all every average Joe does for society!
He can talk himself blue in the face as far as I am concerned. Do community service out the ying yang. Walk on freaking water but NO dog should ever have to endure the possibility of him being able to drown, electrocute, hang, beat, shoot or any other form of punishment he feels meets not performing to his standards.
I have heard the second chance argument ad nauseam…yada yada yada…this admitted dog killer deserves a second chance to own a dog the minute any of those murdered animals gets up and starts their second chance….
Oh by the way I never said he couldn’t play ball…he should be satisfied they let him do that again!
Animals are much more forgiving than humans, Mike. Best wishes to you. Just be prepared for cameras at your window 24/7 because that’s what the world has come to. Forgive yourself and move on!
Well; first off, I believe that this A** Wipe doesn’t even deserve to be out of Prison yet … should have gotten at least FIVE years …
I don’t know of any judge worth their salt who be stupid enough to allow Vick to own a dog or any other pet …
Also; Since Vick is with the Eagles ; I have not or will not watch any Phillies game , PERIOD . Nor will I buy any of their merchandise .
I personally believe that EVERYONE needs to e-mail or write the Philadelphia Eagles Management letting them know that as long as Vick is on the team ..they will not watch their games or buy their merchandise .. also write - e-Mail sponsors of the Phillies games, telling them the same thing …
He also needs to be required to work 4 hours a day in an animal rescue shelter ..
Anyone agree ?

Whoever wrote the above comments is absolutely “stupid”. That person talk and act as if those dogs/animals are human…well, they are not. Sure what Vick did was horrendous, however, is it worst that what Hitler did to the Jewish people? is it worst than what the drug thugs are doing down on the Mexican-American border? I think not. Why dont’ you vent as much venom towards the perpetrators of those atrocities as you do about and what he did to 4-5 dogs. Dogs are not on the same plateau of life as humans and yet this fruitcake of a person as as if a dog and a human were drowning and they could only save one, they would save the dog and let the human drown. People who worship animals like this person are fanatics, plain and simple.

Stupid you say! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black…LOL
Why don’t I vent as much venom about other atrocities you ask…duh…this is an article about an animal killer wanting another animal…pay attention…stay on point.
He abused many more than 4-5 and killed a few more than that if memory serves me correctly…and what he did was much more than horrendous…but people like you are the very reason that children like him grow up believing that shat you are spewing…that animals are not human and therefore are entitled to less than what ever treatment the humans around them are receiving or dolling out.
Hopefully you are not procreating and passing that loving compassion on to unprotected children.
To the Rev Frazier….what religious order do you represent…what about forgiveness and second chances???….I’d hate to be anywhere near the church you lead or do all of your followers do exactly what you feel or face the wrath? Talk about being a man of the cloth…while you condemn Vick for his actions and pass judgement on him , turn around and ask yourself one question…..”What would Jesus do?”…..’nuff said!
So I suppose it’s okay for “reformed” child molesters to run a day care center huh? Forgive and forget!
Only if the dog gets to put him in a ring with a larger, meaner, trained killer to beat, bite and tear him apart, almost to death. And of course sell tickets so people can watch, for the sport of it. Only then, the answer is still NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
