The World Championships of Four Square just occurred up in Maine a couple weeks ago in yet another childhood sport that has gone "adult". There actually is an organization that helps people set up their own community leagues and hosts the World Championships called Squarefour.org. If you happen to live in the Boston area, you can sign up for their own league right online.
I used to rock at four square on the asphalt playgrounds of my youth, but it looks like their rules have taken away the many different ways we cheated hit the ball. No atom bombs or super spin in this league. The dork level seems about on par with the kickball leagues that have sprung up all over, which isn't a bad thing if you're a dork and you're trying to get laid. Still intrigued? 500,000,000 hyperactive children with marginal motor skills can't be wrong. Four square was my lunchbreak ritual.
This may be a west coast variation, but does anyone remember 9-square? Same principle, but with 9. You spend like 20 rounds trying to get to the center server square, only to get pummelled, dodgeball style in about ten seconds by the paste-eating twins who gang up on you, as a crude revenge for giving them atomic wedgies.
never heard of it but it sounds pretty bad ass
Playing indoors. On varnished wood. Whatta bunch of fucking pansies. Dem are da Indoor World Championships.
Call me when they play on pitted tar and knee pads and pants are against the rules.
